STICHTING MAE

We're going back in time to 1963, the Vietnam War is still in its early stages. In the heart of San Francisco, a group of young Marines sets out for a night of fun before they are deployed. But this is no ordinary night out. They participate in a bizarre tradition known as the 'dogfight,' a ruthless competition to find the ugliest date for an exclusive party.

In his search, Eddie Birdlace, a confident and charismatic Marine, meets Rose Fenny, a shy and modest waitress. Eddie manages to entice Rose to the dogfight, unaware of the profound impact this encounter will have on both of them. As the evening progresses, an unexpected bond forms between Eddie and Rose, as Eddie discovers another side of himself and of Rose. Guilt and regret begin to gnaw at him as he questions the morality of the game and the choices he has made.

BACKGROUND

Dogfight is a musical that captures the essence of an era and highlights timeless lessons about beauty standards, war and its impact, gender dynamics, and societal expectations, taking you on an emotionally charged journey. Accompanied by delightful music, you witness the transformation of a young Marine as he grapples with his own vulnerabilities.

The music of Dogfight was written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who later became known for their work on musicals such as Dear Evan Hansen and The Greatest Showman. The story is based on the 1991 film of the same name, directed by Nancy Savoca. Dogfight was first performed Off-Broadway in 2012 at the Second Stage Theatre in New York City. The production was directed by Joe Mantello and choreographed by Christopher Gattelli. The musical received widespread acclaim from critics and audiences alike and was nominated for several awards, including a Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical.
